PUBLIC TRANSPORT IN GHANA

Road transport is the principal mode of transport in Ghana (for both freight and passenger). Mass transport by train and waterway are in a developing stage. It is estimated that only 15 % of the road users use a private car, i.e the other 85 % travel by foot or make use of public transport. Four main ways of public transport in Ghana are:

TAXI

It is said that Ghana is the country with most taxis of the world. A taxi will be shared by 4 or 5 passengers.

MINI BUSES (TROTRO)

The name trotro means coin - coin and refers to the little amount that should be paid to travel from one place to another. Without doubt, the trotro is the most common way to travel for Ghanaians.

COMMUTER BUSES

Commuter buses are used by a few transport organizations to perform long distance transport. As well private companies use commuter buses to collect and deliver staff from and to their homes. Abass Haruna Ventures operates commuter buses in the main corridors of the cities and to the outskirts. This is what we call intra-city mass transport.

RAILWAY TRANSPORT

Railway transport in Ghana is still in a development stage, the southern sector is the only portion of the country benefiting at the moment. The northern part of the country is soon to be connected with the national rail line after the completion of the tracks connecting the south to the north.

In 2005, the management team of Abass Haruna Ventures defined the following mission and vision:

The mission of AHV is:
To provide an efficient urban mass transport system in Ghana through the use of buses

The company’s Vision is:
To build a dominant, reliable, efficient, safe and affordable yet an economically sustainable mass transit public bus company in Ghana. AHV also aims to introduce the Bus Rapid Transit System into Ghana.

THE ESTABLISHMENT OF AHV

A public bus company is operative in Ghana ever since the the Ominibus Service Authority (OSA) started their operations in the year 1927. The OSA contributed a lot to the Ghanaian society in terms of public transport; however, amongst other companies, the OSA assets have been put into divestiture in 1995.

With the influx of new private bus companies, AHV was conceived as an idea of the sole proprietor, Mr. Abass Haruna who thought of the need of introducing yet another private Mass Transit Bus system in the city of Accra.
AHV was established in June 2009.

By law AHV is a private company but in practice AHV aims to meet the public interest. AHV can moreover be labeled as a private – public initiative that aims to operate an effective and affordable transport system in an economical sustainable way.
